Liberating your life after breast cancer
From the Book
As you hear the diagnosis, you take in a deep inhalation and think to yourself, ‘I don’t have time for this’, then pause and hold back your tears. You kept it together through surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, as well as, the regular serving of responsibilities of life. But even now after treatment, you are still afraid. Everyone else has moved on.
As one patient describes, ‘It is as if a door is shut and there is no more support.’ But you have a secret and I know what it is. Behind the practiced smile, you live in fear until the next mammogram, only exhaling when the results show “no evidence of recurrence”; only to hold your breath again until the next time.
About the Book
Live Fearlessly introduces readers to the philosophy of yoga and mindfulness practices for those who desire to live without constant fear of recurrence or death. The author speaks to the reader from the perspective of an experienced oncologic surgeon, but also that of a yoga teacher. Live Fearlessly educates the reader of the impact of fear on mental and physical well-being. It reviews the scientific evidence of mindset on health and provides the reader with practical solutions through a practice which is readily available and thousands of years old.
The best way for the reader to understand the message of the book is to experience it for themselves. This book offers an invitation to reframe the way you think about breast cancer (or any illness) from a different perspective and mindset. Live Fearlessly is a road map to a fulfilling life beyond recovery and one that every woman who has experienced breast cancer should read.
A gift for you
As a thank you for visiting, Dr Emilia Dauway has created:
- 5-minute Breathing Excercise
- Sun Salutation Yoga Sequence for you to follow along with different modifications of the poses
The breathing excercise is a practice I offer my patients to help anchor their day. Its practice can be performed in 3-5 minutes, undertaken immediately after waking or prior to going to bed
The body scan was developed to help provide a focus for the mind to relax from its thoughts.
The Sun Salutation is a sequence that can be repeated and modified to suit your level of movement.
